Slow Water explores the movement and growth logic of mycelium as it digests its way through a suspended knitted network. The knit follows the form of energy lines distilled and funneled to a single point. The resulting morphology resembles a gravity well and meditates on the moment of digestion when all things condense into one. There are infinite possibilities at the resulting point of precipitation.
The cellulose/lignin based yarn is dyed with pigments extracted from the coral fungus Ramaria flava, foraged in Queens, NY. The yarn is then soaked in a PDA solution and used as substrate for the Blue Oyster spawn, provided by Cam’s Urban Farm. The piece experiments with alternative methods of sculpting mycelium three dimensionally, encouraging aerial mycelium growth in the negative space.
